Tanzania is a natural next step for many Ugandan businesses — but the tax and registration requirements are genuinely different, not just a copy of URA's rules with a new logo. Here's what actually matters before you send your first invoice from Dar es Salaam.
Registration comes first
Before anything else, a Tanzanian entity or branch needs to be registered with BRELA (Tanzania's business registry), followed by a Tax Identification Number (TIN) from the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA). Skipping straight to invoicing without this groundwork is the single most common — and most expensive — mistake we see.
VAT works differently
Tanzania's VAT system has its own registration threshold, filing cadence, and documentation requirements, separate from Uganda's. Businesses that assume "VAT is VAT" often misfile in their first few months and spend the next few catching up.
